Michigan Tech

Each summer, Michigan Technological University hosts a series of pre-college Summer Youth Programs (SYP) for students in grades 6-11, where they can explore various careers and educational opportunities, and get a taste of the college experience.

The program’s recruitment efforts had traditionally been done via a standard course catalog delivered via snail-mail. We replaced these with a DVD containing comprehensive program information, an application and a series of 15 short, documentary-style films of kids and instructors participating in the camps. The films gave recipients — potential campers and their parents — a realistic sense of the program, capturing the variety of subjects and enthusiasm of students in a way that could not be delivered by reading a brochure.

Film titles, DVD motion design, recruitment posters and other elements of this integrated effort have a playful edge, and were designed to appeal to their youthful audience.
